Weekly Chores and the Niedziela kids
Hey there, fellow fur-friends and curious humans! It’s Rupert here, your favorite basset hound, reporting live from the beautiful Hideaway Ranch in Texas. You know, being a basset hound gives me a unique perspective on life, especially when it comes to chores and watching my humans grow up. So, grab a comfy spot and let me share my thoughts!
This week was all about chores. First up on the agenda? Closing the pool. Now, let me tell you, it’s a long and boring process. The humans flapped about, cleaning, covering it up, and fussing over every little detail. While they were busy, I took a much-needed nap on the porch.
Once they finished that snooze-fest, we turned our attention to the entrance of the ranch. Jess decided it was time to clear some trees to reveal the spectacular view. And wow, was it worth it! As he chopped and dragged, I stood proudly nearby, supervising, of course. From my low vantage point, I could see the rolling hills stretching into the horizon, and I thought about how much the ranch kids have grown over the years.
Ah, my humans—what a wild bunch they are! Cassi, now 25, has flown the coop and moved all the way to Colorado. It’s hard to believe she’s getting married next week! I still remember the days when she’d chase me around the yard, giggling and tossing my favorite tennis ball. Of course, I'm going to the big event and I even have a tux! (pics forthcoming).
Then there’s Jess, age 24, who’s back from his job in Australia. He’s been pitching in around the ranch quite a bit lately. I swear he’s trying to make up for all those years of sneaking snacks from the kitchen. He’s off again next year which gives me just enough time to soak up all the pats and treats he can muster!
And oh, Luke! At 19, he’s currently stuck on Kodiak Island, Alaska, because some ferry broke down. Poor kid! He’s supposed to be heading back to the ranch mid-October. I can’t wait to give him a proper basset hound welcome. Who else will throw sticks for me?
Finally, there’s Zeke, my favorite basketball player, at 17 and finishing up his senior year in high school. His obsession with basketball is both impressive and a little exhausting. He practices dribbling and shooting around the ranch, and I’ve learned to dodge flying basketballs like a pro. I just wish he’d save some of that energy for belly rubs!
As I sit here, reflecting on all the changes around me, I can’t help but feel a mix of pride and nostalgia. The kids have grown up so fast, each carving their own paths in this big world. They’ve always had my tail-wagging support, whether they were pulling me into their games or lounging with me during movie nights.
It’s a bittersweet feeling, watching them transition into adults. The ranch feels a bit quieter with each passing year, but I know it’s just the nature of life. They’ll always be my humans, and no matter where they go, the Hideaway Ranch will always be home.
As I wrap up this week’s musings, I’m reminded that change is part of life, but so are love, memories, and, of course, endless cuddles. Until next time, keep wagging those tails and enjoying every moment!
With slobbery kisses and happy howls,
Rupert
